Records of birds in the Sembawang Park area have been kept since 1990. Most
of the vegetation in the roads near the Park is garden vegetation, similar
to that of the Park. However, at one point there is a thicker patch of scrub,
the only place where Striped Tit-Babblers and Pied Fantail have been seen
in the area. At the Park the beach that stretches along in front of the
old Kampong Wak Hassan is muddy at low tides and supports the Common Sandpiper
and the Striated Heron. In the past a patch of mangroves and a couple of
prawn ponds lay next to the Kampong, supporting mangrove birds like Ashy
Tailorbirds. These moved into the road and garden areas in 1999, when the
prawn ponds were filled in, and stayed about two years, but have now disappeared.
Birds of the area are listed in two sections - the birds in the gardens
and roads near the Park, and the birds in the Park including the Wak Hassan
Beach. Amongst the list of over 80 species, there are only about 40 species,
with 5 species of Winter Visitors, that are regularly around in the area,
maintaining continuing numbers, whether high or low.

Nature
Society (Singapore) organizes a Singapore-wide Annual Bird Census in
March each year, and since 1993 a census for Sembawang Park has been carried
out on the census day. The March survey picks up the numbers of migrant
birds, as well as residents. Since 2001 there is now a Mid-year Bird Census
in July, which picks up resident numbers only. Numbers of Birds have been
declining slightly in Sembawang Park since 2000. This may well be because
the area on the other side of Sembawang Road was extensively cleared for
building works and is now devoid of trees. Birds that used to move between
the Jalan Inggu/Andrews Avenue area and the Park via the trees inbetween,
may now remain in their own area.
