Mr Lim Chye Joo, Pulau Ubin's Village headman, R.I.P

Category : news

I received an SMS from Ria Tan (WildSingapore) that Mr Lim Chye Joo has passed away earlier today. Mr Lim had turned 100 last year. ["Mr Lim turned 100 in April 2005." By Sharlene Tan. The Straits Times, 03 Apr 2005.]

November Tan wrote to the Pedal Ubin guides shortly after to say:

"The 101 years old headman of Pulau Ubin, Mr Lim Chye Joo, passed away at his home on Pulau Ubin today, 5 October 2006 at 11.11am. He had been battling cancer for the last 30 years. Funeral arrangements are in the works but at present, unconfirmed.

He will be missed by many."

His welcoming nature had charmed many a visitor, young and old, so much so visitors to the island invariably dropped in to visit him for a glimpse of his genial smile. He has been an icon for many of us who visited the island over the decades, because of his personality and the example of his life. Despite the recent expectation of the inevitable, it is with some shock that we now bid him farewell.

R.I.P. Mr Lim. Thanks for the blessings of your smiles in Ubin.
