"Pokok" - Support World Tree Day!

Category : events

14 Mar 2007, Suntec City - At a youth education session at Wildlife Asia 07 yesterday, Louis Ng (ACRES), Geh Min (Nature Society Singapore), Nirmal Ghosh (Straits Times), Melvin Gumal (World Conservation Society, Malaysia), Julien Colomer (WildAid, Cambodia) and myself (RAffles Museum, NUS) formed a panel to spoke to group of youth about man's impact on the environment and careers in wildlife conservation.

The panel speakers radiated a contained passion tempered by the need for sustained action in communicating the urgency of the wildlife crisis. The sense of urgency was real but still, we ended the session on a bright note, with the help of a member of the audience:

Jes Ebrahim's enchanted us with his performance of "Pokok"! Fellow TREe Theatre Group (Malaysia) member Hana Shazwin binti Azizan spraing up to explain that this was part of their campaign to establish a World Tree Day! We all signed their petition to the United Nations, and it was great to see them engaged so constructively so early - see what else they are up to at treetg.com!

As I walked around the trade fair portion, I thought it a pity that we had not exposed this international widlife film community to grassroots groups in Singapore - but lo and behold, NParks was there is full force, with lovely colours and cheery, beaming staff!
