12 Sep 2005 - Kranji War Memorial Dedication Service

Category : events

Kranji War Memorial
Dedication Service

12 Sep 2005: 7.00am

Kranji War Cemetery & Memorial,
9 Woodlands Road (map).

"As a fitting end to the 60th Anniversary Commemoration and in dedication and honour of those who gave their lives in the fight for the freedom of others, the Kranji War Memorial Dedication Service will be held on 12 September, on the same day 60 years ago when Admiral Lord Mountbatten received the surrender document from the Imperial Japanese forces in South-East Asia at the Council Chamber of Singapore Town Hall (now City Hall).

The service will take place at dawn at the Kranji War Memorial and wreaths will be laid in commemoration of the wartime sacrifices by unsung heroes. Poppies signify wartime remembrance and proceeds from their sale will go to the Ex-Services Association for war veterans under its care.

Said Mr. Jeyathurai Ayadurai, Chairman, National Commemoration Committee: "These commemorative events in September play an integral role in shaping and cultivating awareness of our wartime heritage. Although our 60 year-old past is fast receding in the minds of the present generation, it remains at large a part of our identity.

We need to recognise and give due acknowledgement to the common people who became heroes in the face of war, not only by circumstance but also by the force of integrity and choice. I would like to welcome Singaporeans and visitors alike to join us in paying tribute to these wartime sacrifices.""
