Greeting the New Year: Helping Tsunami disaster victims

Category : envt

Over the past week since the Indian Ocean Earthquake/Tsunami disaster of 26 Dec 2004, help has ranged from cash donations and donations of clothes, medicine and hygiene products, food, shelter, toiletries, utensils and cutlery.

As the pile of supplies increased, many used the long holiday of the New Year to help pack and sort. There are no photos of packing as they were too busy then, but one volunteer, "Ling the Merciless," provided a contemplative photo during a quiet spell from packing at the Sri Lankarayama Buddhist Temple on New Year's evening.

Like many blogs around the world, Habitatnews started posting information on 27 Dec 2004 to assist volunteers who were stepping forward. The page was continually updated as needs changed, partly because the response from a generous public was overwhelming, and also as news was tracked from the disaster sites and organisations decided how best to provide help.

Indian Ocean Tsunami Disaster Relief: How we can help from Singapore depends largely on forwarded emails, verification phone and very importantly, observations by volunteers from the ground at collection points.

If you have updated or new information, please send it to tsunami@sivasothi.com.
