New research project on reforestation: Call for volunteers

Category : news

Update - We will hold an orientation meeting for those interested in volunteering for the research project on reforestation next Friday, August 13th 2004.

We will meet at 9:00 am at the parking lot on the corner of Upper Thompson Road and Yio Chu Kang Road, and then proceed to a reforestation plot in Upper Pierce.

We might do a couple of hours of fieldwork, so please come prepared with long pants, shoes, and water. Please email Ken Shono with any questions. Ken Shono, CTFS-AA Asia Program Office, Natural Sciences, National Institute of Education, Office: +65 6790-3825.

Earlier post - A reforestation research project will be carried out by the Center for Tropical Forest Science (Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and NIE) in collaboration with the National Parks Board.

The objective of the project is to monitor reforested areas in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and the Central Catchment in order to evaluate success of reforestation and to develop better techniques for forest restoration.

Field work will begin in early to mid August. We will work only on the weekdays, and you can help out whatever days and times you can. The work is not particularly demanding physically, and will involve mapping of the reforestation plots, and measuring and identifying of planted trees. Data collected can be used to develop this into a project work.

Please email Ken Shono at kshono@nie.edu.sg to volunteer or call him at 6790-3825.
