Back profile straight, ventral profile convex, about 4 vertically elongate black blotches on upper side, dorsal fin with 4 spines. Predatory surface dweller, inhabiting estuaries. Has ability to squirt water from mouth to knock down prey items (usually insects) from overhanging surfaces. To 20 cm. Popular aquarium fish.
