Please note that this pictorial guide is not a fool-proof instrument in identifying fish families. Although the sketches try to show representative examples of each family, not all members share similar form. The reader should also refer to photographs and drawings (listed in the fish index) to appreciate the degree of variation within a given family of fishes. Certain morphological characters are pointed out in writing where these are not apparent in the illustrations. Most fish families are distinguished not by one or two characters, but a whole combination of these, some of which are not visible externally.
