Cyprinidae North and Central America, Europe, Asia and Africa. This very large family includes the carp and carp-like fishes. The immensely popular koi and goldfishes also belong to this family. Members are characterised by their usually weak and toothless jaws, and absence of an adipose fin. They crush and grind their food with special pharyngeal teeth located near the gills. Barbels are often present around the mouth. Most of them are egg- scatterers.
